Review #13
I have a lot of love for red ales and Smithwick’s Red Ale is a great representation for the style. They feel like a bridge between the pale refreshing ales and the darker brown ales or stouts with more complexity. This is a really solid beer that I had while hanging out with friends and think it’s a super easy beer to throw back and enjoy. Slight roasty darker flavors in the background but still very refreshing. 7/10

St Patrick's Day Beer Is Black...
At least it should be: Guinness, Beamish, Murphy's, and various others from craft breweries around Ireland fit the description nicely.
So, in fact, does this.
Though it's a bit harder to find, people who find Guinness (etc.) stout "too heavy" usually like it, because it's a black lager and has the dark bitterness of stout without the "weight".
Green beer, on the other hand...
Well, there's a legitimate version, though it's not Irish. Meet Berliner Weissbier mit Waldmeistersirop, Berlin wheat beer with woodruff syrup:
Berlin Weissbier without syrup is a golden beer, and quite sour, hence the traditional addition of Waldmeister (woodruff) or Himbeer (strawberry RASPBERRY!); straws and wide goblets or squat tumblers are also traditional:
When @dduane and I were at a convention in Germany, we were told (true or not?) that people who didn't mind the sourness of the un-syruped beer sometimes drank "Ampeln" - traffic lights - during an evening out.
I've yet to get to Berlin, and Bavarian Weizenbier is a completely different creature to Berliner Weisse, but the city, the beer and a bunch of other things are all on my bucket list.
As for green beer in Ireland, time was I'd have said you'd never see it here even at St Patrick's, but time was, time is, times change, and tourists want Stuff.
That's probably why, when I was ambling past a pub in Dame Lane a few years ago, I saw a sign.
And when I got closer, the sign did indeed say what I thought it said.
So I went straight into the pub, sat down at the bar, took a deep breath...
...And ordered a Guinness.

Yknow just because this place has affordable craft cocktails, approachably goth decor touches, and bartenders in band shirts, that does NOT mean this is your cool-guy first date """hidden gem.""" Like what are you trying to do? No confidence in the tank top/chain/knit camp-collar shirt combo? Worried shes gonna get bored when you pull out conversational gems like like "yeah my brothers look really irish but i look more italian?" You gonna use the halo from a playlist full underground rap and shoegaze and 80s punk you dont know to make this girl think youre cultured? Think again. This is MY hole where i come three times a week to drink cheap beer and make people listen to my robert anton wilson opinions. This isnt for dates this is for me giving cartomancy readings to drunk people at the end of the bar so they tell me salacious details of their personal lives. If youre gonna be on a first date here you have to be either gay, quiet, or interesting. MY house.

Batkids + Bruce + Alcohol Let's do it First things first, Damian doesn't like alcohol AND HE'S A MINOR so he's excluded, and Bruce only waits for his kids to become 21 years old for these special moments Dick: The first time he had alcohol with Bruce was on his 21st birthday, and it's a night to remember because they both got white girl wasted and Alfred spent the entire night making sure they were comfortable and not stepping foot outside the manor as Batman and Nightwing. There's even a few photos of Bruce and Dick singing karaoke with glasses of craft beer in hand. Jason: Oh dear god. Not only did the motherfucker speak in an Irish accent, he also convinced a very drunk Bruce to dance with him to very loud Irish songs and Dick just sat there in horror but also astonishment because Bruce dancing is a sight to behold. Dick was a bit buzzed but not as drunk as Jason and Bruce. Tim: He got convinced to drink a few beers on his 21st birthday by Jason and Dick while Bruce was away but he came home with bottles of whiskey, tequila and vodka. Tim got excited, the four drank like crazy, and Alfred had a blast laughing at all of them because Tim was quoting Shakespeare while Jason and Dick were acting out a few scenes from Shakespeare's plays and Bruce was really fucking gone in the corner. (Damian would always watch them with Alfred and laugh too.) Duke: He knows how to party. Let's just say, the morning after Duke's 21st birthday was incredible because no one remembered what happened the night before and somehow Dick was on the roof, Jason fell asleep on the driveway, Tim somehow wound up in the bathtub of one of the bathrooms, and Bruce woke up on the counter in the kitchen. Duke was nowhere to be seen until the evening where he was found in the garden, snoring with a bucket of his vomit near him. Cassandra: She knows how to hold her alcohol as a first-time drinker, and she's bested everyone in many drinking games on her 21st birthday. Dick was in 5th place, Jason and Bruce came in 3rd place, Tim was tied with Duke on 2nd place and somehow Cass convinced Alfred to drink too. Even in the morning, she was sober and just a little bit tipsy after her 20th bottle of Jack Daniels. Stephanie: Light-weight but with a lot of violence! On her 21st birthday, she was already smashed after her 2nd shot of tequila but she kept going like a champion and fought Jason in drunken rage. She's pretty violent, and this took place not in the manor but at one of the bars in Gotham. There was a lot of fighting in the bar that night and a lot of regulars now respect her as she came out on top as the winner. Bruce also wound up in that fight and had to go to the hospital because he not only got the lights punched out but he wound up with a broken leg and a broken nose. It was pretty funny though. Bonus! Alfred drinking with Bruce when he turned 21. Oh my god. Alfred loves to tell the story at parties to embarrass Bruce who can't live it down, so here's what happened: When Bruce turned 21, he bought a lot of whiskey, rum and vodka as well as some craft beer, and he had the brilliant idea to try and outdrink Alfred in a contest. Now do note that Alfred knows very well how to hold his liquor to a godly level like Cassandra, and he had the honor of watching a 21 year old Bruce Wayne turn from serious and professional to loud, emotional and very giggly. He somehow ended up at his parents' gravestones and told his dad that he drank a horse full of whiskey before blacking out, falling over, breaking his nose on his mother's gravestone and having to be dragged home by his legs. Alfred will never forget it, and neither will he let Bruce forget it.

Lughnasadh/Lammas Facts
(Hello all! I'm back after a while of being non-witch. So I thought I'll research something to get me in the mood!!!!)
Lammas or Lughnasadh, is the time of the year when we celebrate the first harvest.
August 1st — September 21st (Autumn Equinox)
The cut of the First harvest has always been a significant tradition throughout Europe.
• At dawn the first bundle of grain is tied together after reaping.
• It would then be ceremonially cut and Winnoed.
(This is a technique developed in ancient China, dating back to Wang Zhen's book the Nong Shu in 1313 AD.
Winnowing is a technique in which one throws the mixture into the air so that the wind blows away the lighter chaff, while the heavier grains fall back down for harvest.
The method was not adopted in Europe until the 18th century when winnowing machines used a 'sail fan'. Until the beginning of the 18th century, no rotary winnowing fans existed in the West.)
Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnowing
• After Winnowing, the grains were ground and baked into a Harvest bread, which would be shared by the community as a thanks for the first harvest.
• The first barley (commonly used for porridge, bread and whiskey) stalks would be made into beer.
• The last sheaf (*bundle of tied together grains) would also be cerimonally cut, however instead made into a Corn dolly: Then crafted into a Corn Maiden after a good harvest, or a cailleach (Gaelic for hag)/a cone after a bad harvest. She could be dressed with ribbons and be clothed, or a simple design woven to look like a figurine.
by Liza Frank
"The last of the sheaf would also be kept in the home, often above the fireplace or hearth of the home, until the next harvest. Or it was be placed in the branches of a tree or mixed with the seed for the next year’s sowing."
— Lughnasadh/Lammas History
19 July, 2021 by Noaidi
Lammas and Lugnasadh are different:
Lammas is originally a Christian harvest and bread festivity.
Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lammas
"Lammas (from Old English hlāfmæsse, "loaf-mass"), also known as Loaf Mass Day, is a Christian holiday celebrated in some Englishspeaking countries in the Northern Hemisphere on 1 August."
While Lughnasadh has its roots in the Irish Pagan festivity of the Celtic Sun God Lugh.
Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lughnasadh
"Lughnasadh, Lughnasa or Lúnasa (/ˈluːnəsə/ LOO-nə-sə, Irish: [ˈl̪ˠuːnˠəsˠə]) is a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of the harvest season. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. Traditionally, it is held on 1st August, or about halfway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox."
This day marks when the days are starting to become shorter and the nights are getting longer.
Grain became associated with the cycle of death and rebirth, throughout history.
In early Ireland, it was considered bad luck to harvest your grain any time before Lammas; it meant that the previous year’s harvest had run out early, leading to dire consequences. However, if they make it to August 1st, the first sheaves of grain were cut by the farmer, and by nightfall his wife had made the first loaves of bread of the season.
"Also known as First Harvest, the name of this festival as Lughnasadh is Irish Gaelic for “Commemoration of Lugh”. Some authors give the meaning as marriage, gathering or feast (in the name of) of Lugh. The meaning remains basically the same: Lugh is the Deity of Lughnasadh, and there is a feast in his honour."
